FULL-TIME FACULTY POSITION IN HUMAN RIGHTS AND LAW
The Gallatin School of Individualized Study
NEW YORK UNIVERSITY

The Gallatin School of Individualized Study invites scholars and/or practitioners in the fields of international human rights and law, to apply for a full-time teaching position to commence on September 1, 2010. The position is a non-tenure track but renewable contract line at an assistant or associate level, and includes all the rights of full-time faculty. We seek candidates interested in joining an interdisciplinary undergraduate college that emphasizes scholarship, teaching, experimental approaches, and intensive mentoring of students pursuing individualized paths of study. Depending on experience and interest, some teaching at the MA level may also be a part of the position.

The ideal candidate will have a J.D. or Ph.D., scholarly research focused in the fields of human rights or international law, and some practical experience, whether in formal international organizations, in NGO’s, in a law firm or in local organizing. We look for a candidate with a theoretical and scholarly approach to the practice or advocacy of human rights, who can teach courses providing perspective on the current practice of human rights law or the politics associated with international law and human rights.

The ideal candidate would build bridges to disciplines like political theory or political science, sociology or anthropology, philosophy or law. The candidate will have a significant role in shaping how these courses will relate to the non-classroom learning experiences that our students seek in the field of human rights, and in developing the ways in which this new position will advance the academic and outreach aims of the School.

Qualifications: Ph.D or J.D., practical legal or other experience involving Human Rights; a strong record of research or writing. Teaching experience at the university level desirable.
Founded in 1972, Gallatin is an experimental college of 1,300 students within NYU, a major research university. Its innovative, nationally recognized B.A. and M.A. programs in individualized study encourage students to develop an integrated, multidisciplinary program of study that combines courses taken in the various schools of NYU with independent studies, internships, and Gallatin’s own interdisciplinary seminars, writing courses and arts workshops. The School emphasizes excellent teaching, intensive student advising and mentoring, and a unique combination of program flexibility and academic rigor.

Please send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a writing sample (of up to 30 pages), three letters of recommendation, a statement of your teaching philosophy, and a brief description of three dream courses to: Liz Greene, Director of Human Resources, the Gallatin School, New York University, 715 Broadway, 8th floor, New York, NY 10003 or email to hr.gallatin@nyu.edu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false.
